KUSCU DOGAN MOSQUE AND ITS GRAVESTONES
Kuşçu Doğan mosque & its graveyard is located in downtown of Edirne with some beautiful Ottoman gravestones and is worth visiting by gravestones lovers. Kuşçu Doğan-Birdman Dogan- was a Janissary commander who lived in 15th century AD during the reign of sultan Murat II and Mehmet II. According to the written archieves, he became the Janisarry commander of a squad during the Varna battefield in 1444 between Ottomans and Crusaders . He made a great effort with his squad to win the war so he was appointed as the commander of Janissary army by the sultan and he kept up with his situation for seven years as the general commander of Janissary army as known “ Janissary Aga “. Kuşçu Doğan was dismissed by Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II due to unhandsome situation caused by Janissary soldiers to Ottoman sultan after the campaing in Karamanlids and was exiled to Amasya city later. He was noted for by differnt titles as “ wolf trainer, worm seller or ranger Dogan “ in Ottoman sources. Kuşçu Doğan mosque was built by commander Doğan in 1461-1462 years according to the inscription above the entrance gate. The structure has only one minaret with one central dome supported by four semi-domes in two rows of windows on both sides. The interior part of the mosque was decorated with nice floral & traditional geometric patterns. It was built from cut stone with a wonderful prayer niche in octangular shape and is entered through a big ornamented portal gate. The mosque has also a small graveyard consisting of some sarcophagus and gravestones in front and the backside of the mosque garden. The Hotoz type of female gravestones are located in front part containg beautiful decorations around the neck of the stones. Several sarcophagus are located both in front and back parts with floral patterns around and two Janissary gravestones are worth taking pictures with Serdengeçti headgears. The unique Edirnekari gravestones witch tulip motifs can be seen in this graveyards as well as the late Ottoman gravestones with Hamidi fes headgears having traditional seals of Solomon. Some Ottoman bureaucrats , leading artisans, rich merchants and members of educational class have been buried in different times in this graveyard and they all have been waiting here for the day of resurrection in quiet and respect.
